Marquette Spoils Women's Soccer Opener
August 19, 2012

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Nationally ranked Marquette (1-0) would score early and often in this one as the Bonnies (0-1) opened their season Friday night with a 4-0 loss in their first of two games in the city of Milwaukee this weekend.

Rachel Sloan gave the home team a 1-0 lead when she pounded a header in off the far post in the sixth minute. Ally Miller would be credited with the assist. The Bonnies struggled to find any offense in this one. SBU carried an advantage in fouls and corners in the first half but could not manage to get a shot off on the stingy Marquette defense.

The No. 16 Golden Eagles would continue to control the pace taking a 2-0 lead just eight minutes later when Taylor Madigan would connect on a cross from Kate Reigle. Marquette would take a 3-0 lead in the 27th minute when Rachel Brown rallied home a deflection from twelve yards. The Bonnies would take a 12-0 shot deficit into the locker room at half.

Halftime appeared to alleviate some of the first game nerves for the Bonnies. A goalie change brought some stability on the defensive end for St. Bonaventure. Senior Katie would get the start but freshman Christina Sarokon took over in the second half and allowed just one score on a header from Mary Luba in the 88th minute while making four saves.

After giving up three goals in the first 27 minutes, the St. Bonaventure defense held nationally ranked Marquette scoreless for the next 61 minutes of this one. Marquette would finish with a 20-2 shot advantage.

The Bonnies will face UW-Milwaukee at noon on Sunday. The Panthers have been to four straight NCAA Tournaments and return fifteen letterwinners and six starters to a team that notched a school record 19 wins last season.
