Marshall's game-winner extends win streak
DAVIS, Calif. - Sienna Drizin scored her first goal of the season in Monday’s Causeway Cup matchup to tie the game at one apiece in the 37th minute and Riley Marshall’s first career goal as an Aggie was a memorable one as the freshman midfielder recorded the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute to help UC Davis complete its come-from-behind effort and defeat Sacramento State, 2-1.
Women’s soccer’s victory is its seventh in the last nine head-to-head matches; the other two results were draws. The Aggies have not lost a rivalry match since joining the Big West Conference and improves its record to an impressive 4-0-1 in Cup matches held at Aggie Soccer Field since becoming a Division I program.
UC Davis will now enter its upcoming road trip in Portland with a 1-1 overall record while Sacramento State opens its season with a 0-1 record.
Even though women’s soccer extended its stranglehold on this regional rivalry by pushing its unbeaten streak to nine matches, another one fell when the Hornets jumped on the board early in the match.
By scoring 67 minutes after kickoff, Sacramento State snapped its shutout streak against the Aggies since that goal was the team’s first since Aug. 23, 2009 — a scoring drought that lasted 490 minutes and 55 seconds and spanned the last five matches.
With its win, UC Davis captured the first five points of this head-to-head competition involving 17 of the school’s common teams.
The score remained 1-0 in the Hornets’ favor until Drizin capped a beautiful run at goal from the opposite side of the field by beating goalkeeper Destiny Butcher near post. Setting up UC Davis’ first goal of the season was Nicole Bouvia, who notched her inaugural assist and point on the play.
It was Bouvia’s deft touch on a pass that sliced through the Hornets backline that ended on the foot of her teammate, who quickly capitalized on the scoring opportunity.
The score remained tied until Marshall took full advantage of an Aggie free kick from Ana Marija Sola, taken just outside the 18-yard box near her team’s sideline. Once Sola’s shot drifted towards Marshall, she gained possession by one-touching her shot to the right of Butcher.
“I just felt the chills after everything happened,” said Marshall regarding her inaugural collegiate goal.
“Once Sola kicked a perfectly placed ball, I popped off my defender to boot it in.”
In addition to leading all Aggies with four shots, Sola also posted two of the Aggies’ five shots on goal.
From then, UC Davis’ stellar backline helped seal the team’s first win of the year by providing little, if any opportunity for the Hornets to generate a clean look on goal.
Even though two of Sacramento State’s three shots on goal took place throughout the second half, freshman Alexis Smith needed to make just one save to collect her first win in goal.
By comparison, UC Davis fired 13 times at Butcher, and took five corners as a team compared to the Hornets’ four.
Women’s soccer will now head to Portland State for its next two matches in Friday’s contest against the host Vikings, and Sunday’s neutral-site meeting vs. Eastern Washington.
