Match With William & Mary Cancelled in 66th
Sept. 12, 2013
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The George Washington women’s soccer team led William & Mary, 1-0, midway through the second half, but due to lightning in the Williamsburg, Va., area the game was cancelled after not reaching the 70th minute of play.
The game was suspended at the 65:25 mark when lightning struck and the squads retreated to the locker rooms to wait for the storm to pass, but after several delays and an eventual10:02 p.m. restart the refs called the match. NCAA rules state that a contest may not restart more than three hours after the original start time, and games that do not reach the 70th minute of action are declared “no contest”.
No makeup game has been announced.
GW (2-2-1) held a 1-0 lead over William & Mary (2-1-2) after freshman Lina Proska netted a goal less than 10 minutes into the second frame. Sophomore Kyla Ridley had a breakaway and sent a pass from the top of the box to the left side where Proska finished with a shot to the lower right corner.
