Mattola Scores Late to Push Marauders Past Golden Eagles
Clarion, Pa. – Freshman Kelsey Mattola extended her scoring streak to three games on Friday, and the Marauders shut out Clarion at Memorial Stadium by a score of 1-0 to win their fourth game of the season.
The match was scoreless heading into the intermission. Clarion (3-4-1, 1-4-1 PSAC) lacked an offensive threat through the first side, recording just one shot on goal. The Golden Eagles’ goalkeeper Laura Saussol kept her team in the match, stopping all five of the Millersville shots on goal in the first half.
The Marauders (4-2-1. 2-2-1 PSAC) broke the scoreless tie 17 minutes into the second half. Mattola, scoring in a third-straight game, put Millersville ahead, 1-0. In the Marauders’ last outing, Mattola scored in the 85th minute to tie the game with Shippensburg and take it to extra time. The game ended in a draw, earning Millersville a point in the conference standings.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Matyasich (2-0-1) has been stellar between the pipes since making her first start on Sept. 17. Matyasich made eight saves, including seven in the second half, to earn her first shutout as a Marauder. Matyasich now has 19 saves, while allowing just two goals in 290 total minutes of play.
Millersville is off to its best start since the 2004 season when it won five of its first seven games. Mattola has been a big part of the Marauder’s success with a team leading nine points, four goals and two game-winners.
The Marauders stay on the road for a matchup tomorrow against No. 24 Edinboro. Millersville is set to square off with the Fighting Scots at 1 p.m.
