Mattola's Goal Not Enough in Loss to Mercyhurst
Millersville, Pa. - Freshman Kelsey Mattola scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, but Mercyhurst blitzed the Millersville women's soccer team with 20 shots for a 4-1 win over the homesteanding Marauders Saturday.
Mattola's goal came in the 55th minute when she gain control of a loose ball after a corner kick. That score cut into a 2-0 deficit. That was as close as the Marauders would come, though.
Less that four minutes later, Gabrielle Catrabone scored unassisted to extend the lead back to two and Olivia Resch tacked on a late goal. The Lakers built their lead when Molly Marsh hooked up with Sarah Slezak twice.
Mercyhurst fired 13 shots in the first half and seven in the second. The Marauders totaled 14 shots--four from senior Allison Snyder.
Laker keeper Rachel Griepsma stopped five of the six shots on goal.
With the loss, Millersville dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 3-8-1 in the PSAC. Mercyhurst improved to 6-7-1 overall and 3-6-1 in league play.
Saturday's home game was the last in the careers of Millersville seniors Snyder, Taylor Suskie, Tess Briggs and Niki Roberts.
Millersville, which has now dropped five in a row, finishes the season with five-straight road games. It plays at Wilmington on Oct. 18 at 3:30 p.m.
