Maybin Leads Rangers with Four Goals in 7-1 Victory over ThunderWolves

PUEBLO, Colo.:  Regis University men's soccer came away with another win today over the ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo.  This time, the men combined to score seven goals, four of which were scored by sophomore Martin Maybin.

The Rangers outshot the 25 shots to Pueblo's 16, while putting 13 on goal and only allowing four on goal from the ThunderWolves.

It didn't take the Rangers long to take the lead over the ThunderWolves in Pueblo Tuesday night, as Maybin scored his first goal of the night in the 18^th minute.  The native of Belfast, N. Ireland gained possession of the ball and sent his shot towards the goal from 35 yards out, ripping it through to the back of the net.

 It took Maybin five minutes to score his next goal in the 23^rd.  Sophomore Logan Miller sent a cross toward the goal which senior Taylor Diem attempted to header in.  Pueblo's goalkeeper knocked out the attempt and sent it back out into play.  Maybin was first to the rebound to send his fifth goal of the season and second of the game through the posts.

The rest of the first half would remain scoreless.  Ten minutes into the second half, Pueblo answered with a goal of their own, bringing the score to 2-1 and the Rangers determination to score up.

A few minutes after the opposition's goal, the Rangers were fouled within penalty range.  Miller sent the penalty kick into the bottom right.

The Rangers were far from done for the night.  A short 24 seconds after Miller's goal, junior Justin Ortinau earned the ball, dribbled through opponents and scored the fourth Ranger goal of the night.

Maybin would score the next two goals for Regis.  The ball was played over defenders to the sophomore who finished the play with an unassisted goal in the 73^rd minute.  His fourth goal came in the 81^st minute.  Ortinau sent the ball through to Maybin who beat the charging keeper and finished to bring the Rangers to a 6-1 lead with just over nine minutes left.

"We knew it was going to be a tougher game because it always is when we come down to Pueblo," commented Maybin.  "We just stepped it up even more."

"We need to keep doing what we are doing," he continued.  "We are working hard for each other so if we keep doing that, we'll be fine."

The Rangers wanted to finish with seven goals on the day however, and they accomplished that with three minutes left in the match.  Sophomore Adam Tormoehlenwent down the left side of the field, crossed in towards the goal to senior Mark Kellywho dove flat out to put the header past the goalie.

Freshman Christian Nicolosi earned three saves in his 90:00 minutes of play.

"Whenver they scored to tie, I thought we were going to be in for a tough second half," stated head coach Tony McCall.  "Fortunately for us, we score five unanswered and it was impressive how we finished with the chances we had."

"Marty had an absolutely fantastic performance tonight," he continued.  It shows you he is a quality player that will only get stronger as we go on."

The Rangers will return home on Friday, September 21^st to take on the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions at 2:00 PM.
