McKenzie Meehan Leads BC past Hofstra

Hampstead, NY – Sophomore McKenzie Meehan notched her first career hat trick to lead Boston College
past host Hofstra, 6-5, in overtime on Sunday afternoon in a wild non-conference match. BC is now 2-2 on
the season and will host No. 24 Ohio State on Thursday, Sept. 5 at the Newton Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
Hofstra is now 1-3 on the season and will host Marist on Friday, Sept. 6.
McKenzie Meehan scored three minutes into the first overtime to give BC the victory. Stephanie McCaffrey,
who had the game-winning assist, also had a career day on the field. She finished the match with two goals
and four assists for eight points. The eight points ties the program record for most points in a single game.
Freshman Hayley Dowd notched her first career goal and finished the game with a goal and assist.
Hofstra was led by Leah Golton with two goals while Amber Holt and Amber Stobbs each had a goal and
assist.
The Eagles fell behind early as Hofstra took a 2-0 lead just 10 minutes into the match on two goals by
Golton. The Eagles chipped away as McKenzie Meehan struck for her first goal of the day in the 18th
minute. Less than a minute later, BC was awarded a penalty kick when freshman Hayley Dowd was
dropped in the box. McCaffrey tied the game when she converted on the freebie and it was a 2-2 match at
the half.
Boston College opened the second half by scoring the first three goals in a seven minute span. McKenzie
Meehan started the offensive burst with her second goal off a McCaffrey cross in the 49th minute. McCaffrey
scored in the 55th minute when she broke in alone off a through ball from Dowd. McCaffrey would then send
Dowd into the box and the rookie forward beat the Hofstra goalkeeper low and into the far post in the 57th
minute. BC held a 5-2 lead 31 minutes to play.
Hofstra stormed back and responded with three consecutive goals. Tara Kerns scored in the 58th minute
followed by Sam Scolarici’s goal in the 65th minute. Down 6-5, Hofstra would tie the game when Amber
Stobbs scored in the 75th minute.
Five minutes into overtime, McKenzie Meehan was sent in alone on a through ball from McCaffrey. The two
combined for 14 total points and five goals in the Eagles victory.
BC had an 11-10 edge in shots on goal, while Hofstra had six corner kicks to four for the Eagles. Junior
Jess Mickelson had five saves in the victory.
McKenzie Meehan and Stephanie McCaffrey had five shots apiece while defender Casey Morrison had
three for BC. Hofstra was led by Leah Golton with five shots and Amber Stobbs with three.
