McKenzie Meehan scored two goals and rookie Olivia Vaughnscored her first of the season to lead Boston College past non-conference foe Stony Brook, 3-0, on Thursday night in front of 763 fans at the Newton Soccer Field.
Boston College is now 2-0-1 and will play at Boston University on Sunday night at 7 p.m. Stony Brook is now 0-2-1 on the season.
TURNING POINT
McKenzie Meehan scored her first goal of the season off a cross from Jenna Bike just eight minutes into the game. Seven minutes later, Meehan notched her second of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Meehan's first goal came when she cut down the middle of the box and one-timed a beautiful cross from freshman Jenna Bike. BC was up 1-0 early. Meehan's second strike came seven minutes later when she dribble to her right, by two defenders and put one by a diving Seawolves goalkeeper Shannon Robinson (nine saves) for a 2-0 BC lead.
- With 27 minutes to play, Stony Brook's Raven Edwards one-touched a loose ball in the box that bounced away from the Eagles keeper Erin Seppi. Freshman defender Samantha Hiatt cleared the loose ball before Edwards could get a better touch on the ball.
- In the 70th minute, freshman Olivia Vaughn ran onto a long ball sent down the line by Allyson Swaby. Vaughn dribbled two yards and ripped a right-footed shot from 22-yards out to the left of the Robinson. It was her first career goal at BC.
COACH FOLEY'S QUOTE
"I was really pleased with the energy to start the game. We had three quality goals and credit to Stony Brook's goalkeeper (Shannon Robinson) for making some big time saves,'' said Coach Foley. "We've had a lot of players working really hard and it was nice to reward them with some playing time.''
GAME NOTES
- The two first half goals by McKenzie Meehan gives her a career total of 48 goals and 102 career points. She needs 15 points to become the BC's all-time leader. Meehan's now has 16 career game-winning goals, which ties her with the program's all-time leader Brooke Knowlton, who graduated in 2010. This was also the 13th time Meehan has scored three or more goals in a game.
- Freshman goalkeeper Erin Seppi earned her first career start and picked up the shutout. She had four saves in the win.
- BC had the edge in corners, 9-3.
- The Eagles had 12 shots on goal, while Stony Brook was held to four. Meehan led the offense with six shots, while Hayley Dowd had four shots.
UP NEXT
- BC will travel crosstown Commonwealth Ave. to play at Boston University on Sunday at 7 p.m.
- BC has won five of the last seven games against the Terriers (5-1-1). The Eagles leads the overall series from 1996, 14-5-1.
