Mean Green Soccer Defeats Oregon State, 1-0
DENTON, Texas - Sophomore forward Rachel Holden scored the game-winning goal for the North Texas soccer team in a 1-0 victory against Oregon State on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
"It's a good feeling to be 2-0 and beat a Pac-12 team," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "One of our priorities is to protect our home field which we did this weekend."
As the clock dwindled down, it looked like the Mean Green would be headed to overtime, but Holden had other plans. The sophomore forward beat her defender down to the endline and slipped the ball past a diving keeper to score the game's only goal in the 87th minute. It was Holden's second goal of the weekend and the season.
After being outshot, 7-6, in the first half, North Texas came out with a more aggressive tone in the second period. NT posted four shots in the opening seven minutes of the second half and ended up outshooting the Beavers, 14-4, in the final 45 minutes.
After not posting a shot in the first half, Holden recorded the first two shots of the second half. The sophomore was subbed out with 12 minutes left in the game but returned in the 84th minute. She found the back of the next three minutes later.
Bella Geist made 11 saves in goal for Oregon State and was key to holding the Mean Green scoreless for most of the game.
Similar to Friday night's win, North Texas outshot its opponents and held a large advantage on corner kicks.
Jackie Kerestine picked up her second shutout and second win of the season for the Mean Green. She made three saves in goal.
