Memphis Downs UALR 3-1
MEMPHIS, TENN.- The University of Memphis women's soccer team took a 2-0 lead in the first half and held on for the 3-1 victory over visiting UALR on Sunday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
With the victory, Memphis improves to 2-0 on the season while UALR dropped to 1-1. The Lady Tigers have now hold a 79-6-1 record when scoring three or more goals in a match. The U of M also improves to 7-1 all-time against UALR and has won six-straight in the series outscoring the Trojans 25-2 in those matches.
In the 10th minute, senior forward Melissa Smith got the Lady Tigers first goal with assists coming from freshmen Kaitlyn Atkinsand Kelley Gravlin giving Memphis an early 1-0 lead. Pressure continued against the Trojans as the Tigers held a 13-2 shots advantage in the first half.
Kylie Davis recorded the second goal for Memphis in the 32nd minute with a lofty, deep shot over the goal keeper's hands from 16-yards out. It was Davis' first career goal and the third goal scored by a freshman on the young season.
Freshman Katie Donahue served a cross from the left plank to junior midfielder Taylor Isenhower to set up the Lady Tigers third score on the day. Isenhower put away the goal with her right foot with a hard strike to the back right corner of the net.
UALR showed some hustle in the waning minutes of the match scoring their first goal with a soft lob by Ariel Galletti over goal keeper Elise Kuhar-Pitters in the 78th minute, pulling within a pair of goals.
The Tigers out-shot the Trojans in the second half 16-4 as UALR's goal keeper Michell Pittman had six saves in the second half. Memphis finished the match having out-shot UALR 29-6. It was the first time the U of M had 25 or more shots since posting 30 at UALR in 2010.
The Lady Tigers hit the road for a three-game road trip beginning at Alabam on Friday at 7 p.m. After games at Samford (Aug. 28) and Western Kentucky (Sept. 4), the U of M will return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex to face rival Ole Miss on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
