Memphis women beat Ole Miss
September 12, 2010
OXFORD, Miss. --Second-half goals from Lizzy Simonin and Taylor Isenhower were enough to send #20 Memphis (6-1-0) past Ole Miss (2-4-1) Sunday afternoon at Ole Miss Soccer Complex in Oxford, Miss.
The Rebels drew first blood on a goal from Chelsea Heimann in the 20th minute. The sophomore put it in the back of the net from inside the box after Memphis goalkeeper Elise Kuhar-Pitters turned away a shot from Dylan Davis.
Trailing 1-0 going into halftime following Heimann's score, Memphis regrouped and came out firing at the start of the second half.
Simonin started things off by tying the game in the 49th minute on a penalty kick after Jena Strother was whistled for a handball inside the goalie box. The junior defender fired the strike into the top left corner of the net for her second career penalty kick conversion.
Less than three minutes later, freshman Christabel Oduro found a streaking Isenhower down the left side and left the ball in space for her. Isenhower caught up to the pass and punched it past the Rebel keeper for the Lady Tiger goal.
The Lady Tigers have now scored back-to-back goals in less than three minutes in three consecutive contests. Lizzy Hildebrant and Julia Ignacio scored in a span of 1:50 against UALR and Emmaleigh Davis and Laura Laufenberg scored within 1:20 against Alabama.
Ole Miss nearly tied things up in the 57th minute when Mandy McCalla pushed through the Lady Tiger defense and got off a shot that rolled just left of the post.
Memphis received another scare two minutes later as Erin Emerson broke through for the Rebels and got a shot that sailed over the crossbar. Emerson had another chance in the 69th minute, but her howler from 20 yards out missed wide left.
After surrendering the first half goal to Heimann, Memphis was able to keep a virulent Rebel attack at bay for the remainder of the half behind Kuhar-Pitters' season-high six saves.
Kuhar-Pitters now has 28 wins in goal for the Lady Tigers, bringing her to within 11 of the record (39) held by Isabel Briones (2004-07).
This is the 150th win for the Memphis women's soccer program and the 116th under head coach Brooks Monaghan. The Lady Tigers 6-1 start is the best record through seven games in program history.
The Lady Tigers also improve to 3-0 on the season against Southeastern Conference opponents. Memphis defeated LSU by a margin of 2-1 on Aug. 28 at Mike Rose Soccer Complex and defeated Alabama Sept. 10 by a score of 4-1.
The Rebels managed 11 shots in the game to go along with three corner kicks. Sarah Story picked up five saves in the goal for Ole Miss.
The Lady Tigers will return home for its final non-conference matchup Friday, Sept. 17 when they take on TCU at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
