Men's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Double Overtime
COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was a fight to the end for Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team against a physical and tough Urbana squad on Thursday night in the Panthers season and home opener. The teams battled for two overtimes, and after 110 minutes, the match ended in a draw at 1-1.
After a hard-fought battle for field position in the first half, the two teams ended without a goal. The Blue Knights (0-0-1) outshot the Panthers (0-0-1) 5-3 and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
It wasn't until the 48th minute of the second half when Urbana broke open the scoring with a 35 yard shot into the right side of the goal.
Battling hard for the next 37 minutes, freshman Andrew Schwall (Gahanna, Ohio) kept the Panthers alive after connecting on a loose ball at the 84:39 mark in front of the net to record his first career goal and force overtime.
As both teams struggled with fatigue in the extra frames, neither the Blue Knights nor the Panthers could score. Urbana managed five shots compared to ODU's none.
The tie marks the second tie between the two teams in the last 18 meetings.
The Panthers get an eight day break before hitting the road to North Canton, Ohio for the start of conference play against Malone on September 13. The match is set to start at 4 p.m.
