Men’s Soccer Begins 2012 with 7-0 Shutout
FAYETTE, Iowa: Regis men's soccer set out to Fayette, Iowa to begin their 2012 season with a win over University of Mary. The team did just that and more as they shutout the Marauders seven goals to none.
The first goal of the 2012 Ranger season came from the foot of senior midfielderStephen Reed. From a free kick in front of the goal, Reed sent the ball through to the net in the 48th minute of play.
Shortly after Reed's, two more goals were sent past the Mary goalkeeper. In the 51stminute, senior Taylor Diem passed the ball to sophomore Martin Maybin who went right with it before putting it in the back left corner of the net. A few minutes later, senior transfer Alex Tarnoczi sent his first goal through after getting around the goalie, putting it in to the right. Sophomore Logan Miller picked up an assist on the play.
The fourth goal scored by the Rangers came from Miller. The 2011 season's Freshman of the Year sent his first goal through unassisted. He scored his second goal of the match and season with 19:56 on the clock. Miller was straight in front of the goal and put it in from 25 yards out.
The last two Ranger goals were scored by two freshmen, Ryan Urwiller and Kade Hanson. Urwiller scored in the 78th minute of the match. His first shot was stopped by the goalkeeper, but he stayed persistent and sent that ball through the posts the second attempt. From 20 yards out, Hanson scored his first goal unassisted with 00:55 left on the clock.
The Rangers outshot Mary by 19-4. Freshman goalkeeper Christian Nicolosi put up three saves in between the posts for the Rangers.
The Rangers will continue their Iowa trip by playing Upper Iowa University at 12:00 PM on Sunday, September 2nd.
