Men's Soccer Blanks Bloomsburg, 1-0
Queens, N.Y. - The Queens College men’s soccer team extended its winning streak to five games on Wednesday with a 1-0 blanking of Bloomsburg from the Knights’ soccer field in Flushing. The team also pushed its unbeaten streak to six contests as the team dropped its season opener, tied its next match, and has won every game since.
The Knights pushed the attack early on as Tyler Iocco took the first shot on goal in just the fourth minute. Though he was turned aside, QC kept the pressure up on the offensive end and were rewarded for their persistence in the tenth minute following a Huskies’ foul. On the restart, Glen Reid, who was about 30 yards out, caught everyone sleeping and wrapped the ball around the defensive wall and into the corner as the defense and goalie just stood motionless. The unassisted marker put Queens ahead, 1-0. Reid would take a game-high six shots in the win.
Reid nearly doubled the Knights’ lead in the 22nd minute. Following a yellow card against Bloomsburg, the Knights pressed the attack and Reid flicked a ball that was heading into the top of the goal. Huskies keeper, Bernie Roell punched the ball away to safety and the deficit remained at one. The 1-0 score would continue through halftime and into the second half.
In the second 45, Bloomsburg responded by pressing the attack out of their end. They pushed forward and the Knights defensive line held pat. In fact, Aitor Gurrutxaga and Jorge Artavia cleaned many passes into the middle of the field. The two were helped in the 85th minute by a Johnny-on-the-spot, Metri Abdul-Karim.
With Bloomsburg having possession in the box, Nate Conrad out jumped Queens’ goalie, Sean Geoghegan and put his head on a ball that was surely headed for goal. However, Knights’ captain Abdul-Karim, was positioned between the pipes and on the goal line, and the senior was able to kick the ball to safety to keep the slim, 1-0 lead. QC ran out the clock and escaped with a 1-0 win.
In the win, the Knights outshot the Huskies, 17-7. Geoghegan made a pair of saves en route to his third clean sheet of the season. The team returns to East Coast Conference play on Saturday, September 28, when they host Molloy College. The kickoff is slated for 2:00 PM.
