Men's Soccer Comes up Short Against Radford
Box Score
High Point, NC – Earlier this afternoon, the men's soccer trip concluded their North Carolina trip with a game against Radford University. The Panthers found themselves in trouble early on and wound up in a 3-0 hole before the half, but managed to climb back into it and pull within one. However, the Highlanders tacked on a late goal to close the books on a 4-2 contest, serving Adelphi their third loss. In defeat, the Panthers drop to 0-4 while Radford moves to 2-0-1.
Adelphi ran in to trouble in the opening minutes of the contest when Radford's Luis Grande found a streaking Joe Mayer who slipped passed the defense and received the pass to beat Ahmad Salamah, giving the Highlanders the early 1-0 advantage.
In the 16th minute, Radford really put the pressure on when Bernardo Ulmo, on an assist from Mayer, fired a shot from the inside the box to quickly put Adelphi down by two.
Two shots from Steve Rivera and one from Brandon Stoneham put keeper Ryan Taylor to the test, but he prevailed on all three occasions and kept the Panthers at bay.
Before breaking for the half, Radford seemingly put the game out of reach when Chel Ho Park Kim blasted a shot from 12 yards out. Salamah got a piece of it, but it was not enough as the ball dribbled into the net for a third Highlander goal.
Forced to play from behind right off the bat, the Panthers did not give up and came out aggressive in the second. The effort paid off and resulted in a goal in the 58th minute courtesy of Omar Edwards who headed in a pass from Adrian Sundquist, cutting the deficit to two.
Less than a minute later, Edwards came up big for the Brown and Gold once again. Rivera lobbed a cross from the right side and connected with Edwards who headed in his second goal of the game.
Salamah made another five saves to keep his team within striking distance, but his teammates struggled to find the equalizer. Stoneham had one last attempt on Taylor but came up empty in the 87th minute. In the 89th minute, Radford put the nail in the coffin with a final score by Matt Janssen.
Salahmah made eight saves in the loss. The Panthers held a 4-3 corner kick advantage but were outshot 21-10.
Adelphi is back in action on Saturday, September 8 at 1pm when they host the Minutemen of UMass on Motamed Field.
