Men's Soccer Defeated by Elon
ELON, N.C. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision on the road to Elon on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Rudd Field. The Ospreys fell to 1-4-0, while the Phoenix improved to 1-3-1 overall.
“We gutted it out today,” head coach Derek Marinatos stated. “We were tired after playing three matches in five days. We had already played two really good teams in a row on the road and today we played a third. Elon is really good team and they played extremely well. Today we just didn't have it.”
In the match, the Ospreys were out shot 22-to-4, including 12-to-1 on shots on goal. Offensively, Josh Ciambella,Pedro D'Avila, Nick May and Zack Meyer were all credited with shots on the afternoon with Meyer's shot coming on goal.
Defensively, North Florida recorded seven saves on the day. Bertele was credited with six saves in the match, playing all 90 minutes between the posts. UNF also recorded a team save against the Phoenix.
Elon was the first team to scratch the scoreboard, netting a goal in the 33rd minute of the match. The Phoenix's Daniel Lovitz took short pass from Chris Thomas on the right side from about 10 yards out to put the hosts in front 1-0. The Phoenix added a second goal just before the half, scoring in the 41st minute. Thomas took a long pass from Gabe Latigue and beat the North Florida defense to put Elon in front 2-0 just before intermission.
Elon extended its advantage to 3-0 with a goal in the 62nd minute of the match. Latigue passed the ball to Thomas who dumped it off to Archie Karpeh who took a short shot into the net. The final two goals of the match came in the closing minutes of the match. Thomas netted his second goal of the match, taking a ball from Glenn Scott in the middle of the box and chipping it over the North Florida keeper's head. Elon's Glenn Scott scored the final goal of the match on a free kick from the left side of the box about 15 yards out in the 87th minute.
North Florida concludes the five match road swing with a match against FIU in Miami, Fla. on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
