Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 OT Thriller to UNH
Box Score
Durham, NH – The men's soccer team took on the Wildcats of the University of New Hampshire earlier tonight. An early goal by both sides highlighted regulation time before the hosts notched the game winner in the 93rd minute. With the loss, Adelphi drops to 1-8 while UNH moves to 4-3-2.
The first half was played relatively even with both sides registering four shots and each having two on goal. In the 7th minute, Adelphi shot out to the early lead and put up their first goal. Steve Rivera bounced a pass over to Nicholas Costa for the turnaround shot to find the back of the net, registering the first score of the game and his first of the season.
The Wildcats wasted no time responding. After two missed attempts off of corners, Charlie Roche found himself in possession of a deflected shot taken by teammate Chris Wild and fired a shot in to the lower left pocket of the net, evening the slate at one a piece.
In the 39th and 40th minutes, Wild and Domenic Parrelli exchanged shots on goal, but were both met with saves by the opposing keepers.
Senior James Diana tested his luck early on in the second as did Adam Weinzimmer; each of whom had the only shots on goal but were stopped by new keeper, Travis Worra. Likewise, UNH's Aaron Smith and David Schlatter returned the favor with the Wildcat's only shots on the mark, but Ahmad Salamah came up big and stopped both.
In the early stages of the 87th minute, the Panthers had an opportunity off of a corner kick taken by Rivera, but the attempt was cleared out by the Wildcat back line. Robert Palumbo took the final attempt in regulation but his shot was wide and the teams would head into extra minutes.
It did not take long to crown a winner; just two minutes and fifty seconds in, a corner attempt sent in from Wild was stopped, but the clear attempt by Adelphi's defense failed. Picked up by Palumbo on a one-timer from 20 yards out, he found the back of the net to put an end to the game.
Ahmad Salamah made three saves in the loss while his counterparts made two each.
The Panthers were out-shot 15-0 and were at an 8-3 disadvantage in corners.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, September 29 when they host the Red Foxes of Marist College on Motamed Field at 4pm. Watch the game live at www.aupanthers.tv or follow the live stats here.
