Men's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision to HPU
Box Score
High Point, NC – Earlier tonight, the men's soccer team took on the Panthers of High Point University in the first of two games in the Flash Gordon Motors Invitational hosted by HPU. After falling behind by one goal in the first half, Adelphi slipped further into a deficit after the hosts put in two more in the second. The Brown and Gold managed to cut into the lead with a goal of their own, but it would be as close as they would get with the final score reading 3-1 in favor of High Point. With the loss, the Panthers continue to search for their first win and drop to 0-3 while HPU advances to 2-0.
Adrian Sundquist was the first to threaten with a scoring opportunity in the first half as he tested HPU keeper Kody Palmer early on, but was met with a save. Nearly 15 minutes later, Mamadee Nyepon returned the favor and kept Ahmad Salamah on his toes with shot of his own, but was unsuccessful.
In the 35th minute, Shane Malcom sent in a cross where Ben Burdon received it and found the back of the net to break the deadlock and give HPU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Nearly 10 minutes in, Leon Carby found Malcom who found a gap in the Panther defense and added another goal, making it a 2-0 contest. In the ensuing eight minutes, HPU managed to get another four shots off, one of which was saved by Salamah. Two were off the mark but one, off the foot of Shawn Sloan from 15 yards out, hit the mark, making it a 3-0 game.
With just over 16 minutes remaining, Adelphi broke their silence on a heads up effort by senior James Diana who managed to pick up the loose ball in front of the net and, from two yards out, slipped a shot past Palmer to cut the deficit to two.
However, it would be as close as the Panthers would get with the clock reaching the 90 minute mark and the scoreboard reading 3-1 in favor of the hosts.
The Panthers managed a total of nine shots and held a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Salamah made five saves in the loss while his counterpart made three.
Adelphi closes out their southern trip on Sunday, August 2 when they take on Radford at 1pm. Live stats can be found here
