Men’s Soccer Drops Seesaw Showdown At Monroe
ROCHESTER, N.Y. ---- The Massasoit men’s soccer team fell behind 2-0 and rallied to tie the score in the second half, but Monroe CC tallied a goal in the 73rd minute for the difference, defeating the Warriors 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Monroe CC (4-3) scored two goals in the first 19 minutes to take the early advantage.
Massasoit’s Pepe Vieira (Brockton) notched his first two goals of the season in the 30th and 62nd minutes of action to knot the score, 2-2. Vieira was assisted by Garrett Arruda (Fall River) and Flavio Cula (Brockton) on the goals.
The Tribune’s Ienik Spencer swung the score back in favor of Monroe putting away what proved to be the game winner in the 73rd minute to drop Masasoit to 2-2 on the season.
WHY MASSASOIT LOST: The Warriors had plenty of opportunities, totaling 18 shots and 11 attempts coming on goal. In addition, Vieira and Julio Gomes hit the cross bar and post in the 14th and 53rd minutes of action.
Monroe’s goalkeeper Noah Plain made seven saves in goal for the home squad.
SHUTOUT STREAK SNAPPED: Massasoit’s shutout streak was snapped in the eighth minute against Monroe CC. The Warriors had gone 188:52 without allowing a goal. The Warriors shut out both MassBay CC and CCRI during the week. The last goal allowed had been in the season opening loss vs. Essex County in the 89th minute of action.
PEPE PUTS IT IN: Pepe Vieira tallied his first career multi-goal performance for the Warriors in the loss. The sophomore now has seven goals in his career at Massasoit.
NEXT UP: Massasoit will play the Williams College JV team on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Williamstown, Mass. The head coach of the Williams College varsity squad, Mike Russo, started the Massasoit men’s program back in 1974.
