Men’s Soccer Falls In Season Finale To St. Francis (N.Y.), 2-1
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men’s soccer team fell to Northeast Conference opponent St. Francis (N.Y.) in the final game of the regular season, 2-1, on Senior Day Sunday at Quinnipiac Soccer Field. Quinnipiac finishes its season with a 6-10-0 overall record (4-6-0 NEC), while St. Francis (N.Y.) ends its season with a 10-5-3 overall record (5-3-2 NEC).
The Bobcats received its goal in the 84th minute of action on freshman Nils von der Heide’s (Munich, Germany) second goal of the season. On the score, fellow freshman Hakon Weloy Aarseth (Bergen, Norway) collected his second assist of the season.
St. Francis (N.Y.) got on the board in the 8th minute of play, as junior midfielder Adam Maabdi netted his fifth goal of the season. Maabdi dribbled in on a long run before taking a simple touch to his right foot just inside the goalkeeper’s box. Maabdi’s shot then rocketed past freshman goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) to put the Terriers up, 1-0.
St. Francis (N.Y.) added its second goal in the 51st minute of play on sophomore midfielder Simon Ytterbom’s first tally of the season. Off the corner kick, Maabdi’s initial header was off target, but fell to the feet of sophomore midfielder John Johansson who then knocked it over to Ytterbom. As he fell to the turf, Ytterbom pushed the ball through the congestion of players into the back of the net.
The Bobcats score came off a clever pass from Weloy Aarseth, who cut in towards the middle of the goalkeeper’s box before giving a through ball towards his left to fellow streaking freshman von der Heide. The Munich native struck the ball with his left foot, past the Terriers diving junior goalkeeper Tyler Clarhaut.
Overall, Angoitia and junior Josh Lavallee (Upland, Calif.) combined to make seven saves in net for the Bobcats, while Clarhaut turned away seven shots for the Terriers.
St. Francis (N.Y.) held the slight overall shot advantage, 24-to-17, as well as an 8-to-3 corner kick lead.
