Men's Soccer Falls To Providence In Season Opener, 2-1
HAMDEN, Conn. – Despite netting the game’s first goal on freshman Nils von der Heide’s (Munich, Germany) first-career tally, the Quinnipiac men’s soccer team was defeated, 2-1, in its season-opener against non-conference opponent Providence on Monday afternoon. The loss drops the Bobcats to 0-1 on the season, while Providence improves to 1-1 on the year.
Quinnipiac struck first, as Von der Heide (Munich, Germany) fought well to get in position on a cross from junior Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wisc.) in the 24th minute of play. The ball found the head of Von der Heide, who used a clever redirection to beat Providence goalkeeper Jhojan Obando and give Quinnipiac the 1-0 advantage.
Providence found the back of the net 13 minutes later, as Giuseppe Guerriero knocked home his first goal of the season off an assist from Jimmy Petruccelli, knotting up the score at one apiece heading into halftime.
The Friars proceeded to take the lead in the 70th minute of play off a corner kick from Petruccelli. Wilder Arboleda positioned himself on the back-end of the cross, and forced the ball into the net, by freshman goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Vizcaya).
Overall, the Friars held a slight shot advantage, 14 to11, as well as a 6 to 1 advantage in corner kicks.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it travels to face Boston College on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m.
