Men's Soccer Falls to UMBC 3-1 on Saturday
Catonsville, Maryland---The St. Francis Brooklyn men's soccer team were defeated by #RV UMBC Retrievers, 3-1, in the title game of the 2013 Hampton Inn BWI Classic on Saturday evening from Retrievers Soccer Park.
"UMBC is an excellent team. They have a lot of offensive weapons," commented head coach Tom Giovatto. "It's tough to play a man down for that length of time but the guys showed a lot of heart and battled tonight. Tonight's game will be a tough but, in the morning, everyone will be looking forward to our home opener at Brooklyn Bridge Park on Tuesday evening."
UMBC (3-0-1) created their first scoring opportunity three minutes into the contest when Geaton Caltabiano fired a shot from the left wing that found the arms of junior goalkeeper Jack Binks. The Retrievers were relentless on their attack as they created two scoring chances within a five minute span. In the 21st minute, the Retrievers' Pete Caringi misfired on a shot from the left wing that sailed wide left of the goal. On the next UMBC possession, Caringi headed the ball wide right of the goal.
In the 28th minute, the Retrievers got on the board, thanks to Caringi. UMBC's Jordan Becker dribbled down the right side of the field and was able to locate teammate Stephen Ho. Ho, in turn, crossed the ball into the box as Caringi soared in for a diving header to give the home eleven a 1-0 lead.
St. Francis Brooklyn (1-2-0), who were playing a man down from the 35th minute, caught a break as the Retrievers Mamadou Kansaye's shot attempt hit the crossbar and didn't trickle back into the goal. The Terriers evened the score in the 41st minute off the foot of junior forward and reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year Kevin Correa.
A yellow card was assessed to UMBC's Oumar Ballo after he took down a Terrier player in the box. Correa was selected to take the penalty kick for St. Francis Brooklyn. The Flushing native took a running start as he rocketed the shot past goalkeeper Phil Saunders for the first half equalizer. For Correa, it was his second goal of the season and first career penalty kick goal.
The Retrievers and Terriers continued to play even for the first twenty minutes of the second half before the home squad struck. In the 67th minute, Caltabiano took the corner kick and laced towards the goal. The ball trickled past Binks after it ricocheted off a Terrier player into the goal. The goal was credited as an own goal. It proved to be the game winner.
The Retrievers added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute as Caringi recorded his second goal of the match. After receiving the long cross from the far left side from Ho, Carinigi played the ball and directed the shot to the back part of the net; over the outstretched reach of Binks to give UMBC the 3-1 lead.
For the match, St. Francis Brooklyn was held to just one shot (Correa's goal) while allowing 15 shots from UMBC. Binks tied his career best with five saves, the fourth such game of his career. The Terriers didn't record a corner kick while the Retrievers took eight in the match.
St. Francis Brooklyn will begin a new era on Tuesday evening, as they open their new home at Brooklyn Bridge Park-Pier 5. The Terriers welcome the Saint Peter's University Peacocks to Brooklyn Heights. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 pm.
