Men’s soccer loses heartbreaker in overtime
Tim Goldman ’15 scored 2:02 into the first sudden-victory overtime period to lift Ithaca College to a 2-1 win against Hamilton College in a non-conference game at Hamilton’s Love Field on Oct. 9.
The Bombers defeated the Continentals in overtime for the second straight year. Ithaca won 1-0 in double overtime at home in 2011, and leads the all-time series, 13-9-4.
Ryan Norland '13 tallied his first goal of the season for the Bombers. Casey Williamson '15 and Adam Tamburello '15 had one assist apiece. David Kaminsky '14 started in goal and made two saves, and Kenny Chapman '16 relieved him at the break and made one stop.
John McGuinnis '16 notched his first collegiate goal and Ralph Jerome '15 was credited with his first assist for Hamilton. Eric Boole '13 started in goal and didn't make a save in the first half. Boole was replaced by Fred Porges '14, who made one save in the loss.
Ithaca (6-2-4 overall) started its game-winning play with Williamson’s pass that went by two defenders to Goldman at the top of the box. Goldman controlled the pass in the middle and slid a low shot across Porges that settled in the left side of the goal.
Each team had a great scoring opportunity midway through the first half. In the 33rd minute, McGuinnis’ touch shot was kicked away at the goal line by a defender who cleared the ball over the end line. Just seconds later, Blair Carney ’16 stole the ball for the Bombers near midfield and had only Boole to beat, but his shot sailed high over the goal.
McGuinnis redeemed himself in the 42nd minute. Jerome fired a shot that Kaminsky stopped but could not control, and McGuinnis knocked in the rebound. The Continentals led 1-0 at the half.
Ithaca knotted the score in the 70th minute. Tamburello’s free kick found Norland, who tallied his first goal on a diving header from point-blank range.
Hamilton (3-6-1) hosts NESCAC rival Bowdoin College on Saturday, Oct. 13. Ithaca travels to Utica College for an Empire 8 Conference contest on Saturday.
