Men’s Soccer Preseason Camp Commences
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – With 15 days remaining before the 2015 regular season begins, the Marist men’s soccer team reported to preseason camp Tuesday.
The Red Foxes held meetings and fitness testing Wednesday before heading out on Leonidoff Field for the first team practice Thursday. Marist will be having two-a-days through Saturday.
Head Coach Matt Viggiano will lead the Red Foxes for a ninth season in 2015 after the team finished 7-7-4 overall and 3-5-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play last year.
Marist has a young core of returners in sophomores Kevin Kappock and Erik Dahl, who were selected to the MAAC All-Rookie Team last season. Mark Rajovic will come back in net after finishing third in the conference with 80 saves and posting seven shutouts. Senior Connor Preece and junior Dylan MacVane were selected as the 2015 captains.
The team graduated five seniors last year including leading scorer Myles Ashong. MJ Stellwag and Matty Berman, who started all 18 games, were also part of the outgoing class along with defender Dylan Lee. Seven freshmen were added to the roster during the offseason.
Marist will play a road contest against Saint Joseph’s at 5 p.m. Aug. 28 to open the regular season. The Red Foxes will host New Hampshire at 5 p.m. Aug. 30 to begin a four-match home stand that includes non-conference contests against NJIT, Columbia and Binghamton. MAAC play begins Sept. 26 when Marist heads to Rider for a 1 p.m. contest.
