Men's Soccer Snaps Skid with 1-0 Win at FDU
TEANECK, N.J. – The Lehigh men’s soccer team shrugged off a three-game skid and moved back into the win column for the first time since the season opener with Tuesday night’s 1-0 win at Fairleigh Dickinson.
Sophomore Mark Forrest continues to have the hot foot for Lehigh (2-3) as he recorded the lone goal of the contest tonight and now has four tallies in the last two games. Forrest tallied the game-winner in the 50th minute when Danny Gonzalez threaded the needle through traffic to set up Forrest with the assist on the goal.
The Mountain Hawks came out with excellent pressure to start the second half which led to the goal. Lehigh could have tacked on another shortly after with two quality chances on close range shots by Doyle Tuvesson and Forrest, but Fairleigh Dickinson (2-4) goalkeeper Sebastian Ferreira came up with clutch back-to-back saves. Ferreira made multiple critical saves in the second half as he had to fend off the Lehigh pressure and finished with six saves on the night.
The Lehigh defense also had an impact on the game as defenders repeatedly got in position to block shots to help preserve the second clean sheet of the season for goalkeeper Jacob Gottwald who finished with two saves. One of Gottwald’s saves came in a crucial moment in 43rd minute when he snared a deflected header off a free kick that prevented the Knights from taking a lead and momentum into halftime.
The Mountain Hawks put together a complete effort on both ends of the field and capitalized when they needed to in a game where both teams put up similar numbers in the stat columns.
“It’s good to get a win, especially on the road, after coming into the night with three-straight losses,” said head coach Dean Koski. “We did a good job of supplying pressure and creating chances. Our backline did a good job of disrupting their opportunities. Overall, it was a good team effort and we did what we had to do to get the win tonight.”
Lehigh will return to the pitch on Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest at home against Robert Morris.
