Men's Soccer Stays on Top of PacWest
Kaneohe, HI (September 27, 2012) - The Hawai'i Pacific (4-3, 4-0) men's soccer team remained perfect in its quest to repeat as PacWest champions, defeating Fresno Pacific University (4-4, 2-3) by the score of 3-2. Alejandro Porras scored two goals, including the late game winner, and Mael Lefebvre made several big saves down the stretch in the winning effort for the Sea Warriors.
Porras got HPU on the board early, heading in a pass from Heimana Chene in the fourth minute making it 1-0 Sea Warriors. It would be Chene dishing out an assist again, finding Keenan Ho in the 25th minute pushing the Sea Warriors lead to 2-0. The Sunbirds would cut the lead in half just a minute later when Lefebrve got crossed up on a free kick by Ivan Mirkovic, narrowing HPU's lead to 2-1. Despite trailing 4-3 in shots, the Sea Warriors would take the 2-1 lead to the half.
HPU's lead would vanish early in the second period when Sunbird, Guillermo Talancon beat Lefebrve in the 49th minute tying the game at two. Fresno Pacific controlled much of the action in the second period racking up an 8-4 advantage in shots, forcing Lefebrve to make several brilliant saves. The game appeared as if it was heading to overtime until Sea Warrior defenseman Truls Henrik Lystad sent a long cross to the far post finding a diving Porras who gave the Sea Warriors a 3-2 lead with less than seven minutes remaining. The second Porras goal would prove to be the game winner.
The match was a fairly physical affair with 32 total fouls called and would see the Sea Warriors pick up four cautions. Porras has now scored at least one goal in all four PacWest games and has recorded at least one point in five straight games dating back to September 9th.
HPU continues PacWest play when it heads on a five game road swing that begins with Azusa Pacific University on October 4th; game time is schedule for 5 PM.
