Men’s Soccer Tops Bonnies, 1-0, For First Wi
OLEAN, NY – Last season, Hartwick’s men’s soccer team was forced to wait until its eleventh game before they got a victory, a 2-1 triumph over St. Bonaventure on Elmore Field. The Hawks beat the Bonnies again on Monday night, 1-0, at Marr Athletics Complex for their first victory of the 2015 campaign. Both teams are now 1-1 on the year.
Sophomore Wyatt Scott (Cicero, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) scored the game’s lone goal in the 55th minute to help secure the win. ’Wick freshman keeper Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) got the clean sheet in goal and the Hawk defense limited the Bonnies to just two shots on goal all night.
Hartwick nearly doubled up the Bonnies in shots for the night, 19-10. ’Wick had much of the ball possession, while firing nine shots on target and earning seven corners to St. Bonaventure’s one.
The Hawks were unlucky to not get the reward in the opening half after out-shooting the Bonnies by an 11-7 margin. Sophomore Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) recorded five of ’Wick shots. Two were stopped by Bonnies’ goalkeeper Bobby Diaz. Another was cleared off the line by defender Jaskamal Singh in the 34th minute. Senior David Styles (Bognor Regis, England/St. Phillip Howard) also had two shots on target in the opening 45 minutes but both were turned away by Diaz.
Hartwick finally broke through at the 54:36 of the contest. Scott finished for his second collegiate goal. Senior captain Jack Miller (Commack, NY/Commack) earned the assist on the play, the fifth of his career at ’Wick.
The Hawks continued to pressure the hosts’ goal, registering four shots, with two coming from Berry, in the next eight minutes of action. The Bonnies could only muster one shot until under seven minutes remained. Breno Calegari and Singh each had shots in a three-minute span but neither was on target and the Hawks claimed the victory.
Berry would end the game with seven of the Hawks’ 19 shots. Styles finished with three.
Diaz made seven saves in the Bonaventure goal. Wilson stopped two in the opening half for Hartwick.
The Hawks return home and will host Bucknell in the second game of the Mayor’s Cup on Friday night on Elmore at 7:30 p.m. Northern Kentucky and St. Francis (PA) play in the opener at 5 p.m.
