Men's Soccer Tops Fordham, 2-1 For First Win of the Season
Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. - The men's soccer team hosted the Rams of Fordham University earlier tonight in a non-conference contest. The Panthers jumped out to an early two goal lead in the opening half and it proved to be just enough as they held the Rams to just one score. With the win, the Panthers move to 1-3 while the rams slip to 3-3.
From the opening whistle, Adelphi came out playing very aggressive, challenging for every ball and getting good, quality looks at the net. In the 12th minute Domenico Parrelli chipped a pass up the midfield to a waiting Issa Tall who managed to get through two defenders and tap the ball past Ram keeper, Ryan Meara, into the bottom left corner of the net, giving the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.
Adelphi put the Rams further in a hole just before the 31st minute mark when Brandon Stoneham blasted a shot from 30 yards out and nailed the top left shelf for the second goal of the game. Keeper Christopher Herrera made big stops for the Panthers to keep the Rams scoreless heading into the half.
In the 52nd minute, John Niyonsaba got deep in Panther territory but was stopped by Herrera on two consecutive attempts. However, Niyonsaba gained control of a loose ball, passed it off to Jack-Tim Murphy who earned a goal for his team, cutting the lead in half.
The Rams had another opportunity on a penalty kick a few minutes later. Niyonsaba attempted to go left, but Herrera made a huge diving save, defending his goal and holding the Rams.
Adelphi outshot the Rams 14-12 and had one less corner, 4-5. Herrera earned his first collegiate victory and made eight saves on the night.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, September 21 when they travel to New Rochelle, New York for a non-conference matchup against the Gaels of Iona College. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
