Men’s Soccer: ACU Loses 4-0 to Marymount in Season Finale
Phoenix, Ariz. – Marymount College (6-11-0), from Rancho Palos Verdes, California, scored three goals in the second half and defeated Arizona Christian University (0-15-1), 4-0, in Saturday, Oct. 29 collegiate men’s soccer action at Chuck Chambers Field on the campus of Scottsdale Christian Academy. ACU, coached by first-year mentor Jonathan Lenarz, completes its 2011 season. ACU was shut out 10 times this season.
ACU honored five senior players prior to the season-ending match. Forward Brett Bowman (Glendale, Ariz./Northwest Christian School), defender Cody Kleppe (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista H.S.), and midfielder John Kortman (Phoenix, Ariz./Northwest Christian School) have played all four years of the collegiate careers for the Firestorm (2008-11), and twin brothers, Joshua Ortiz-Gonzalez and Oscar Ortiz-Gonzalez (Kayes, Mali, Africa/Lycee Dougoukolo Konare H.S.) have three years of soccer at ACU.
Marymount outshot ACU overall, 17-6, and attempted 8 shots on goal while ACU tried two, both by junior midfielder Tyler Cotton (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain H.S./Mesa CC). ACU’s sophomore goalkeeper Jorge Arauz (Las Vegas, Nev./Durango H.S.), saved four shots on goal, while Marymount’s starter Marcos Topolos made saves on Cotton’s shots. Both teams attempted three corner kicks.
Forward Viktor Ahlgren, who scored three goals last Friday in a 5-0 win over ACU, scored two more in the Firestorm’s season finale. Ahlgren stole the ball from an ACU defender and scored unassisted at 36:25 of the first half, and made the score 4-0 at the 88:29 mark near the end of the match. Marymount led just 1-0 at the halftime intermission, but scored early in the second half at 46:08 when midfielder Martin Navarro intercepted an ACU clearing pass and headed the ball past Arauz. Defender Jason Milletti made the score 3-0 when he received a long chip behind the ACU defense and beat Arauz one on one.
