Men’s Soccer: ACU Shut Out 9-0 by Embry-Riddle
Phoenix, Ariz. – Three players from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) scored two goals each as the Eagles shut out Arizona Christian University, 9-0, in Tuesday, October 18 collegiate men’s soccer action at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix.
Embry-Riddle, now 6-5-3 overall and 4-0-0 in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference matches, outshot ACU, 37-1, and led 13-1 in corner kicks. ACU fell to 0-12-1 overall and 0-4-1 in A.I.I. matches and suffered its seventh shutout loss this season.
The Firestorm plays against Marymount College from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., Friday, October 21, at 5 p.m., with the ACU women’s soccer team playing Marymount at 7 p.m.
Embry-Riddle attempted 27 shots in the first half with 12 directly on goal and took a 4-0 halftime lead, and added five more goals with 10 more shots and seven more shots on goal in the second half. ACU goalkeeper Tyler Cotton (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain H.S./Mesa CC), the fourth goalkeeper used by the Firestorm this season, saved eight ERAU shots on goal in the first half and two more in the second half, and three other certain scoring opportunities were blocked just before crossing the ACU goal line by defenders. ERAU goalkeepers Alex Elvidge and Jeremy Meduvsky rarely saw action in the ACU offensive end and had to make just one save.
Midfielder Scott Larson began the scoring for the Eagles with a goal at 19:14 off an assist from freshman Tristan Korras. Forward Gage Palmer scored ERAU’s second and third goals at 34:48 and 35:05 of the first half, with Korras assisting again on the first one and an assist from forward Colton Ryan on the second tally. Korras made the score 4-0 with an unassisted goal at 40:48.
In the second half, the teams played 24 minutes before ERAU midfielder Tyler Silverberg took a pass from sophomore Keldon Hatch and dribbled ahead and scored the Eagles’ fifth goal. Hatch added an assist on the first of two goals by sophomore defender Michael Browne at 79:21. Browne also scored at 85:15 off an assist from freshman Andrew Winchell for a 7-0 advantage, and sophomore midfielder Thiago Xavier scored at 87:38 and 89:41 with assists from freshman Tim Williams and Browne.
