Men’s Soccer: Point Loma Nazarene Nets 2-0 Win over ACU
San Diego, Calif. – Point Loma Nazarene University improved its season record to 6-1-1 with a 2-0 intercollegiate men’s soccer victory over visiting Arizona Christian University (0-7-0), Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 27, on the Point Loma campus in San Diego. The Sea Lions scored one goal in each half.
After 11 days without a match, Arizona Christian plays next at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex, just north of Dunlap and 25th Street, against Soka University of America, Friday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. match. “We are eager to begin a stretch of several home matches in October,” says ACU head coach Jonathan Lenarz who noted that ACU has never won a home match in five seasons of intercollegiate men’s soccer.
PLNU midfielder Tyler Hall, who attempted three shots on goal, gave the Sea Lions a 1-0 lead just 2:23 into the match when his low, hard shot deflected off sophomore goalkeeper Jorge Arauz (Las Vegas, Nev./Durango H.S.) right back to Hall who buried his first goal of 2011.
The Sea Lions added their second goal at 61:05 of the second half when a crossing pass deflected off an ACU defender to a wide-open Erick Friessen who fired the ball past Arauz from point-blank range.
Point Loma recorded 12 shots directly on Arauz in the ACU net, while ACU managed two shots on goal against PLNU netminder Keith Cline. PLNU also attempted 10 corner kicks while ACU was awarded just two. Arauz made 10 saves.
Both ACU shots on goal came in a span of seven minutes early in the second half. The first opportunity, by freshman midfielder Alfonso Romero (Douglas, Ariz./Douglas H.S.), came just 45 seconds after halftime and earned ACU a corner kick when Cline blocked the shot out of bounds.
The second scoring chance, at 52:47, came when Cline stopped a breakaway by senior forward Brett Bowman (Glendale, Ariz./Northwest Christian School).
“While Point Loma dominated possession, their scores resulted from a bit of luck, while ACU had no luck on its tries,” says Lenarz. “Our defense adjusted well to the threats caused by Point Loma’s particular style of play. I am pleased that we are thinking the game better.”
