Michigan Downs Northeastern, 4-1
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan used a three-goal first half and added another in the 70th minute to hand the Northeastern men's soccer team (3-1-0) its first loss of the season on Sunday at the U-M Soccer Complex, 4-1.
Kofi Opare and Fabio Pereira combined for three goals and two assists, while Don Anding scored the lone goal of the match for the Huskies, his second of the season. The Wolverines controlled the tempo of play for most of the day, outshooting NU 20-7 and generated six corners to the Huskies' three.
It was all Michigan for most of the first half as the Wolverines outshot the Huskies 12-4 and scored twice within two minutes to take a commanding advantage early.
UM took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute as Opare picked up his first goal of the season when he headed a corner kick by Pereira from the left flank.
The Huskies were forced to insert freshman Dylan Faber into the match in the 27th minute as Oliver Blum (four saves) was assessed a red card, prompting a penalty kick for Michigan. Pereira converted on the PK to give the Wolverines a two-goal edge.
Northeastern answered with 2:18 left in the half as Anding connected on a strike from 30 yards out that beat Michigan goalkeeper Adam Grinwis top shelf. The Wolverines regained its momentum and two-goal advantage, however, just 36 seconds after the Anding tally as Latif Alashe picked up his second goal of the season on a flick from inside the six.
Michigan continued to pressure in a second half that saw the teams combine for four yellow cards, holding an 8-3 edge in shots and adding an insurance marker in the 70th minute.
Opare picked up his second goal of the afternoon with 19:14 left in regulation when he collected a pass from Pereira and beat Faber on a shot from 18 yards out.
The Huskies will continue its three-game road trip on Saturday as NU travels to Fairfield for a 7 p.m. match.
