Middle Tennessee routs ETSU, 7-1
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee soccer bounced back in dominating fashion as the Blue Raiders picked up a 7-1 victory over East Tennessee State Sunday afternoon at the Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
MT (3-2-0) outshot ETSU (4-1-0) 13-to-7, holding the Bucs without a shot in the first half. The seven goals now give the Blue Raiders 20 on the season through five matches.
The Raiders pounced early in the first half, tallying four goals. Regina Thomas got the high-octane offense flowing with her second goal this season, scoring inside the left box from Whitney Jorgenson’s cross at 6:42.
Nearly 14 minutes later, senior Charity Blair footed her first goal this season as she tallied a rebound from Tori Hawkins’ shot.
The windy conditions on Sunday helped the Blue Raiders as Whitney Jorgenson booted a 25-yard shot over the keeper to hit the middle of the net, giving MT the 3-0 lead.
Kelsie Roberts earned her first career goal thanks to a corner kick from Paige Goeglein to put the Blue Raiders up by four at the break.
“Attacking and keeping up the momentum was part of the game plan for us today,” said head coach Aston Rhoden. “Credit all those players that came in the game and kept the momentum going. We are starting to figure things out and put ourselves in scoring position.”
ETSU broke up the shutout at the 50th minute when Ramey Kerns tallied her fifth goal from a cross inside the left portion of the box.
However, Middle Tennessee answered just five minutes later when Allison Stallard netted her season first with a set piece assist from Goeglein.
In the 76th minute, Goeglein added her fourth point in the match with a goal from 10-yards out. Whitney Jorgenson picked up her second assist on the play.
Brianna Jasenak scored her first collegiate goal as she zipped a ball past the keeper inside the box. Whitney Jorgenson once again had the assist, her third of the contest.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer (2-1) managed her second victory, deflecting away six shots and picking up three saves in 90 minutes of action. ETSU’s Sierra Campbell (4-1) took her first loss this season, collecting three saves in the contest.
“Every game is a step toward conference play and that’s right around the corner,” said Rhoden. “I think this past weekend is about taking the positives from the Vanderbilt game and this game and enhance that during training this week.”
Blue Raider soccer returns to action on Friday when MT visits in-state rival Tennessee Tech. The match is slated for a 3pm kick in Cookeville.
