Midwestern draws with #7 Incarnate Word, 1-1
SAN ANTONIO -- For the second time this season, Midwestern State was on the verge of taking down No. 7-ranked Incarnate Word Friday night at Benson Stadium.
Once again, the Cardinals tallied a goal in the final minutes to force overtime as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw.
MSU sophomore Len Smith tallied his team-high ninth goal of the season converting a one-timer in the 60th minute off of a short cross from Andrew Power to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs also took a one-goal lead into the final two minutes of regulation in their first meeting with UIW last month in Wichita Falls before Vincent deposited his second goal on an equalizer in the 89th minute before completing a hat trick with the game winner six minutes into overtime.
Incarnate Word performed as Alex de la Garza blasted in a goal from 18 yards out on a cleared corner kick in the same 89th minute as the previous meeting.
The Mustangs, however, would clinch their fifth tie of the season to set a new program high water mark while moving to 8-2-5 on the season and to 0-1-3 in league play.
The draw snapped Incarnate Word's 11-match winning streak as the Cardinals moved to 11-2-1 and 4-0-1.
Midwestern State returns to action Friday night against rival West Texas A&M at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
