Midwestern settles for 1-1 draw at Eastern New Mexico

PORTALES, N.M. - Midwestern State capped off its tough weekend battling Eastern New Mexico to a 1-1 draw in Lone Star Conference play Sunday afternoon at the ENMU Soccer Field.
"We just went through a double overtime heartbreaker Friday night," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "Going through it again, you just wonder how you were going to respond. The girls are terribly disappointed, but I''m proud of how they responded. They are worn out."
The Mustangs (3-2-2, 1-2-1) were coming off of a 2-1 double overtime loss Friday at West Texas A&M, then faced even more adversity against the Zias, who moved to 4-3-2 on the season and to 2-1-2 in league play.
ENMU junior Kimberly Luna drilled a bending shot from the right wing over MSU goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth go give the Zias a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.
"(Luna) made a great shot on Mallory," Trimble said. "She hit it as hard as she could and it went just inside the back post."
The goal was a temporary setback for a determined Mustangs'' side which outshot Eastern New Mexico by a 25-9 margin including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal.
"We stepped up and played really well," Trimble said.
Senior forward Lindsay Pritchard notched the equalizer in the 64th minute converting a through ball served down the left wing by center back Megan Barnhart.
"It was a great left-footed shot at the far outside of the 18," Trimble said.
Pritchard banged a shot off of the crossbar in the 88th minute and junior midfielder Haley Crandall served the ball off of the post in the first overtime kept the Mustangs from capturing a positive result.
"Eastern New Mexico is a great team," Trimble said. "We just weren''t able to get the goal we needed, but we''re going to progress."
The Mustangs return home to play a pair of LSC matches next weekend at the MSU Soccer Field beginning with Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday before taking on Texas Woman''s University on Sunday.
