Midwestern State all about firsts in 4-0 win over TWU
October 23, 2011
DENTON, Texas - Midwestern State was very much in the mood for historic firsts taking a dominating 4-0 result over Texas Woman''s University here Sunday afternoon.
Junior Maddie Fraser tallied her first goal of the season, while freshman Payton Fookes and sophomore Caroline Kemp each recorded their first collegiate goals.
On top of all of that, senior Kelsey Hill notched a goal and two assists to match the program''s career marks with 43 goals and 105 points.
And all of it capped off a solid weekend of play for the Mustangs, who improved to 10-4-2 on the season and to 8-3-1 in league, after suffering a heart wrenching loss to Central Oklahoma early last week.
"If you were looking at us at 8:15 after the game against UCO, it was easy to worry about how the girls would respond," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "They came out with energy and played very well. They were focused and came out ready to play each game. These were big wins this weekend at a key time of the year."
Hill was definitely the star Sunday despite being marked by TWU''s Brittany Martin all game long.
"She had some great opportunities, but she created a lot of chances," Trimble said. "That''s the thing about Kelsey. She can score goals, but is always looking to make the right pass."
The Wichita Falls native took a cross and made a nice one-touch pass back to Fraser for the lone score of the opening half.
The Mustangs got rolling in the second half as Hill threaded a through ball to Fookes for a breakaway tally in the 57th minute.
The two reversed roles in the 69th minute as Fookes served a cross deep in the box allowing Hill head in her ninth goal of the season.
Hill tied Becky Athey (1995-98) and April Lasater (1996-98) at the top of MSU''s all-time goal scoring list while matching Lasater for the No. 1 position on the program''s all-time points list.
Kemp tacked on a fourth goal for Midwestern on another breakaway in the 80th minute.
Midwestern State returns to action Friday night against No. 2 Abilene Christian at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
