Midwestern State drops LSC opener to Angelo State, 1-0
September 16, 2011
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Maggie Schaffer blasted in a goal just inside the box to lift Angelo State past No. 22 Midwestern State in its Lone Star Conference opener Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
"Overall, I thought we played well but got a little frustrated at times," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said."(Angelo State) is a very solid defensive team and they played very well at times."
The Mustangs dipped to 2-1-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play, while Angelo State improved to 2-3 and 1-0.
Schaffer took a throw-in and deked an MSU defender in the 62nd minute, then blasted a rocket into the upper-right corner of the net for the only tally of the night.
"We dove for the fake shot and you really can''t do that," Trimble said. "In the college game, you just can''t give them that kind of look."
It was the only shot out of MSU goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth''s reach as the junior equaled a career high with nine saves which included a sprawling save of a Shaeffer blast earlier in the 62nd minute which deflected on the crossbar and a spectacular save of Megan Schaeffer penalty kick in the 66th minute.
Midwestern was a bit unlucky in the opening minutes of the second half as the Mustangs came out of the intermission with an energy burst, but senior forward Lindsay Pritchard''s chip past Angelo State keeper Taylor Carinald was cleared off the line in the 53rd minute.
Pritchard, who seemed to be breating chances at will, zipped a cross through the 6-yard box that narrowly missed the cutting Kelsey Hill.
"We had our opportunities but we didn''t take advantage of what we had," Trimble said. "As a team, we created chances, but just just couldn''t get much going in the offensive third. Credit Angelo, they are an outstanding defensive team."
Midwestern State placed eight of 22 shots on frame, while the Rambelles placed 10 of 15 shots on target.
Midwestern State takes on Incarnate Word in a Lone Star Conference tilt Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for noon.
