Midwestern State falls in overtime at West Texas A&M, 2-1
September 23, 2011
CANYON, Texas - West Texas A&M''s Melissa Carnero''s unassisted goal in the second overtime lifted the Lady Buffs to a 2-1 Lone Star Conference win over Midwestern State Friday night at The Pitch at Buffalo Sports Park.
The Mustangs were limited to two total shots on the stat sheet to fall to 3-2-1 on the season and to 2-2 in league play.
Senior forward Kelsey Hill struck for her fourth goal of the season with an unassisted goal in the 18th minute, but the Lady Buffs battled back to notch the equalizer on freshman Jessie Thomas'' second goal of the campaign in the 36th minute.
The goal was Hill’s 38th career goal as she needs just two more to join former standouts Becky Athey (43 goals), April Lasater (43 goals) and Megan Dodson (40 goals) in MSU’s 40-Goal Club.
MSU freshman Katy Catney was credited with the lone shot by either side during a 55-minute stretch from the start of the second half until the start of the second overtime.
But West Texas A&M, who was credited with five total shots, produced two opportunities at the beginning of the second overtime before Carnero emerged from a scrum to notch the game winner.
Midwestern State looks to rebound Sunday in another LSC road contest against Eastern New Mexico in Portales. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
