Milwaukee Settles For 0-0 Draw At Oakland
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Elaina LaMacchia posted her sixth straight shutout and ran her scoreless appearance streak to 10 consecutive games in helping the Milwaukee women's soccer team draw with Oakland, 0-0, Sunday afternoon at the OU Upper Fields.
The Panthers (14-1-1, 7-0-1 Horizon League) and Golden Grizzlies (6-6-3, 4-2-2 Horizon League) were forced to move to a turf field on campus after heavy rain in the local area caused a shift from the usual facility.
"I am proud of the team on how they competed under tough conditions," head coach Troy Fabiano said. "Being our third game in eight days and being on the road is a challenge."
With the scoreless result, Milwaukee clinches its fifth consecutive outright Horizon League regular-season title. It also extended its unbeaten streak in Horizon League regular-season games to 32 (29-0-3) in a row.
"Today's match was a good opportunity for us to learn and get better as we prepare for our last regular season game at home on Friday," Fabiano added.
It was a slow start to the day for the Panther offense, with McKenna Stratton forcing a save in the 12th minute to start the action. The only other on-target attempt came in the 39th minute on a header from Mackenzie Schill.
LaMacchia made four saves on the afternoon, none bigger than back-to-back stops following a pair of Oakland corner kicks in the 76th and 77th minutes.
She also set a new program record with the clean sheet. It extended her scoreless streak to 919:48, edging out the program mark of 917:27 set by Mallory Geurts back in 2017.
The Panthers nearly won it in thrilling fashion at the end of regulation. A Gaby Schwartz free kick was saved in the 89th minute, as was McKaela Schmelzer's follow-up in the 90th, with OU's Jaimie Leas preventing the heroics with a pair of quality saves.
LaMacchia added another stop in overtime in the 97th minute, but the offense generated just one shot in the extra 20 minutes.
For the day, Oakland earned advantages of 11-to-8 in shots and 6-to-2 in corner kicks, with both teams putting four shots on target. Julia Barajas was the only Panther to record a pair of shots.
Up next, the team moves on to November with just one final regular-season contest remaining. That comes Friday against Youngstown State. The 7 p.m. matchup will also be "Senior Day".
