Milwaukee Waits Until Late To Top Bradley
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Milwaukee men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the match to defeat Bradley, 2-0, Monday afternoon at McCutchan Stadium.
"I was very pleased with the way the guys conducted themselves today," head coach Kris Kelderman said. "It was a really hot day and when it's two games in three days, that is a tough environment to begin with for both teams."
The Panthers (2-1-1) spent much of the day in control of the game against the Braves (1-2-0), but needed goals from Evan Conway in the 86th minute and another from Nick Moon in the 88th to put it away.
"The guys hung in there and fought to the end," Kelderman said. "We knew the game wasn't going to be easy, all things considered – the opponent, the weather … but we had to maintain our patience and stick to the game plan. I knew that it may come down to the very end."
Playing in the final day of the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic, Milwaukee came out the aggressor in the first half. The team recorded five of the first six shots of the contest within the first 30 minutes – three by Moon – but could not find the back of the net.
Freddy Lorenzen then came up big just before intermission, making one of his three stops in the 45th minute to keep things scoreless.
"We had some chances early and clearly felt we could have had the lead," Kelderman said. "We came out with a well-deserved 2-0 victory and it was a great effort by the guys."
The second half featured more of the same, with UWM getting three attempts in the first five minutes, all by Vuk Latinovich.
Just when things seemed headed for overtime for a third consecutive game, Conway netted the game-winner, heading in a cross from Moon at the 85:24 mark.
Moon kept pressing and came up big, making it 2-0 at the 87:59 mark, sending one in off the post after dribbling around the goalkeeper.
For their efforts on the weekend, Moon, Conway and Latinovich were named to the All-Tournament Team.
For the day, Milwaukee ended with advantages of 14-to-6 in shots and 4-to-2 in corner kicks. Latinovich recorded a game-high five shots; Moon had four. Lorenzen posted his second shutout in four starts this season.
Up next, the team returns home for the first of three cup games of the season. On September 9, the Panthers welcome Green Bay to Engelmann Stadium in the annual battle for the "Chancellor's Cup".
