Mines Earns 5-0 Senior Day Rout Over Mountain Lions
GOLDEN – Aided by six points from its senior corps, Colorado School of Mines men's soccer matched its season-high goals total for the second time in as many matches, blitzing UC-Colorado Springs 5-0 on Wednesday's Senior Day in Golden.
Senior Seun Ogunmodede found the early game-winner, his second of the season, 5:20 into the evening as he sprinted around the outside of two defenders and angled a feed from junior Jared Herselman to the far, right post. After beginning the week 15th in Division II in assists, Herselman moved into sole possession of the RMAC lead with his eighth of the season.
Less than five minutes later at 10:02, senior Baski Baker played back a left end line pass to the top of the penalty arc, where sophomore Joe Haines one-timed a 23-yard blast, his fifth this season.
Mines went ahead three scores in the 26th minute on an own goal by the Mountain Lions (4-6-3, 3-5-3 RMAC), and following intermission, moved in front 4-0 with senior Alex Gunberg lifting a short volley from the close left wing to Baker who headed in his sixth at front net at 63:55.
Freshman Allan Foster III tacked on an insurance marker and his first collegiate score in the 79th, putting away a 10-yard rebound following a saved shot attempt by junior Darren Shaw.
The men held advantages of 17-10 in shots and 10-4 in shots on goals. Haines had a game-high three shots on frame, while Baker, Ogunmodede, Foster III, Shaw, senior Tesho Akindele and sophomore Chayce Moniz each landed one.
Senior Colin Baker (10-3-1) turned aside three looks for his third shutout, highlighted by consecutive stops less than four seconds apart on back-to-back headers in the second half.
As the only conference contest of the day, the Orediggers (10-3-1, 8-3-0 RMAC) moved two points ahead of Regis for first place in the RMAC standings with the win. Mines and the Rangers (8-2-1, 7-2-1 RMAC) meet for the only time of the regular season at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27 at Regis Match Pitch in Denver.
