Mirando Scores Twice to Lift Mount to Win
Emmitsburg, Md. (October 17, 2014) – After nearly 100 minutes of back-and-forth action, senior Alicia Mirando scored her second goal of the game with 34 seconds left in the first overtime period to give the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team a 2-1 Northeast Conference victory over Bryant on Friday at Waldron Family Stadium.
The win for the Mount (2-13-0, 1-3-0 NEC) is the first in NEC play, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-11-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.
With Mirando's tallies in the 63rd and 100th minutes, the senior forward moved into a tie for sixth in Mount history with 14 career goals and is tied for third for game-winning goals with four. The Bulldogs were able to level the scoring on Sarah Shucker's 85th minute goal before Mirando's golden goal.
The Mount, which held a 6-4 edge in shots in the first half, produced a number of offensive chances in the opening 45 minutes but was unable to score.
In the 18th minute, freshman Jordan Fine split a pair of Bryant defenders and fired a shot from 18 yards out that sailed just wide to the right. Fellow freshman Jordan Layfield also had an open look from the edge of the box, but her offering flew over the crossbar in the 33rd minute.
The Mount's best chance of the first half came in the 37th minute. After a cross came in front of the goal, Fine ripped a shot from six yards out that beat goalkeeper Kaylan Conrad, but was cleared off the line by a Bryant defender.
Following halftime, Mirando kick started the offense when she settled a failed clearing attempt by the Bulldogs and cracked a shot into the left side netting from 20 yards out in the 63rd minute.
Bryant, which took 11 shots in the second half, found the equalizer in the 85th minute when Shucker tapped in a cross from Scout Benson after a beautiful feed from Emily Barbato to even the score at 1-1.
Play opened up in the overtime with both teams registering four shots apiece. In the waning seconds of the first overtime, Paige Peck lofted a ball into the box where Mirando maneuvered past Conrad with her first touch and slipped her shot into the open goal for the game winner in the 100th minute.
Mount goalkeeper Rachel Bourne made two first-half saves, and Vicky Cocozza registered three saves the rest of the way. On the other end, Conrad turned away six Mount shots. Bryant held a 19-16 edge in shots and took three corner kicks to the Mount's one. Offensively, Mirando took a game-high four shots for the home side.
The Mount will return to Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 19, for another NEC home game versus Robert Morris at 1 p.m.
