It’s safe to say that the MLS Draft certainly doesn’t mean what it used to as far as a team-building mechanism.
There is still some decent, high-level talent to be had, for the teams doing their homework and willing to work players in. Some of those drafted after playing college soccer still end up with the U.S. men’s national team. Eight of the players in the current January camp played college soccer and joined an MLS team via the draft.
And while the January camp is an exception, considering it’s played outside an international window, it does suggest that one or two players from the 2020 draft could find their way to a USMNT cap one day. Here are five candidates that could pull it off.
