Monmouth announces 2015 recruiting class
Monmouth University head women's soccer coach Krissy Turner announced the addition of four players to the Hawks program this fall, including three from the Garden State. Joining the Monmouth program are New Jersey products Allison DeLuca (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central), Madison Gibson (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) and Jazlyn Moya (Avenel, N.J./Colonia), while LeAnne Davis (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) from Pennsylvania will also don the Blue & White in 2015.
“Our ability to continuously attract top notch student-athletes will allow us to maintain our place as one of the better teams in our league,” stated head coach Krissy Turner, who has won consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. “This class addresses some of our needs due to graduation, as well as adds more attacking players who can score goals.”
Turner, who enters her 18th season as the Hawks’ head coach in 2015 added, “This group is excited to join our program and we are very enthusiastic about adding their talents to our team.”
DeLuca, a four-year varsity starter at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Flemington, New Jersey, was named the Skyland Conference and Hunterdon County Democrat Player of the Year as a senior. DeLuca, who registered 16 goals and nine assists in 2014 alone as a captain, was tabbed first team all-area, first team all-conference and first team All-Group IV, while being named third team all-state. DeLuca, who competed for ODP U-16 Regional Champions in 2012 and 2013, tallied 55 goals and 34 assists in her prep career, where the Red Devils claimed three county championships and in 2014 won the sectional title and advanced to the state finals with an overall 20-4 record. A four-time Team Offensive MVP, DeLuca was All-Group IV first team and third team all-state as a junior (18 goals and 11 assists), as well as the West Jersey Player of the Year, first team All-West Jersey, first team all-area and first team all-conference.
Turner said, "Allison was player of the year in her area because of her ability to take players on, distribute and score goals at important moments. Our attacking play will improve by adding a player with Allison's talent level."
A three-sport standout at Lower Cape May Regional High School, Gibson is the school’s all-time record holder for goals scored with 126, while helping lead the Tigers to a combined 59-15-6 record in her four varsity seasons, where LCMR won the 2013 and 2014 Cape Atlantic League titles. Gibson, who competed for Team NJ Rush, which won the 2014 US Club State Championship and the EDP Cup Showcase Championship, was named the 2014 Atlantic City Press Player of the Year, as well as first team All-South Jersey and first team all-conference as a senior. The 2011 Rookie of the Year, Gibson was tabbed first team All-Atlantic City Press all four years, along with second team All-South Jersey as a sophomore and junior. Gibson, a four-year varsity letterwinner in basketball and lacrosse, has scored over 800 points on the hardwood and has 124 goals in first three seasons in lacrosse.
Turner noted, “Madison is a tremendously gifted athlete. She is a left-sided player, which in soccer is rare but at the same time a terrific asset. Madison has the ability to serve great crosses and score, as well as having excellent speed to join the attack. Her versatility to play in multiple positions creates depth for us all over the field."
A four-year varsity letterwinner as a midfielder at Colonia High School, Moya notched 32 goals and 25 assists during her career, which saw her earn All-White Division and all-conference honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. A 2014 team captain, Moya was named the team MVP in 2013 and 2014, while being named to the Division All-Star Team the last three seasons. Moya competed for New Jersey ODP from 2010 to 2012 as well as Regional ODP in 2011.
"Jazlyn is extremely talented on the ball," stated Turner. “Her quickness and skill set allow her to thrive in 1-v-1 situations. Jazlyn will add depth to our midfield and possibly play out wide as a forward."
Davis, a National Junior Honor Society and Honor Roll student-athlete at Wilson High School, in West Lawn, Pennsylvania, was a four-year varsity letterwinner and three-year starter on defense for the Bulldogs, who went a combined 75-18-2 in her four seasons. A 2014 team captain, Davis was named All-Berks County First Team, after leading team’s defense to a league-low 14 goals allowed and a Berks County Championship. Named second team All-Berks County and all-division as a junior, where Wilson advanced in the PIAA AAA State Tournament. Davis was also part of the FC Revolution club team which won the 2013 U16 Eastern Pennsylvania state championship.
Turner stated, "Leanne is the prototypical center back with great size, toughness and instincts to play as the heart of the defense. We will be counting on her to contribute to the back line early on in her career."
Monmouth, which won the 2014 MAAC Regular Season Championship for a second straight season, placed nine players on All-MAAC Teams, including the Rookie of the Year in Rachelle Ross, and Defensive Player of the Year Alexa Freguletti. In addition, Turner was named Coach of the Year for a second straight season, her fifth conference coach of the year accolade. Five Hawks earned first team all-conference including Freguletti, Kim Clemmer, Brianne Boyle, Julie Spracklin and Alexis McTamney, while Monique Goncalves, Colleen Howard, Erica Murphy and Ross were named second team all-league.
The Hawks, who earned their 17th straight NSCAA Team Academic Award, and posted a 14-5 overall record, while going 9-1 in MAAC matches, were ranked 10th in the final NSCAA Northeast Regional Poll. Monmouth has now registered a double-digit win total for nine straight seasons.
