MONMOUTH BLANKS MARIST, 1-0
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Joseph Schmid (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute as the Monmouth University men’s soccer team defeated Marist, 1-0, Saturday night at Tenney Stadium. With the clean sheet, the Hawks improve to 5-5-3 (4-0-1 MAAC), while the Red Foxes fall to 2-11-0, 1-4-0 MAAC).
Though Marist took an 11-8 advantage in shots on the night, none of the Red Foxes’ 11 shots were on goal. By contrast, five of the Hawks’ shots were on target, resulting in one goal and four saves by Marist goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski. Monmouth freshman goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky (Lincoln Park, N.J./DePaul Catholic) did not have to make a save in posting his third shutout in five starts. The Hawks took a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
In the 71st minute, Dave Nigro (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) sent a cross from the left side that Schmid sent on net with one touch past a diving Sokalski for the game-winning goal.
The Hawks return to MAAC action Wednesday, when they play host to intrastate foe Saint Peter’s. Kickoff from The Great Lawn is scheduled for 7 p.m.
