Monmouth Cools Off Saints
Dave Nigro and Danny Figarella scored as defending MAAC Tournament Champion Monmouth prevailed over Siena Soccer 2-0 in a matchup of conference unbeatens in West Long Branch, N.J. Sophomore goalkeeper Gianni Carillo made three saves for the Saints.
Monmouth (7-3-1, 3-0) held a slim 11-10 edge in shots, while Siena (3-6-2, 2-1) once again dominated in corner kicks to the tune of an 11-1 advantage. The Saints now hold an 84-41 margin in corners overall for the season.
But it was the Hawks that were able to cash in on their opportunities as the Saints’ three-match winning streak was snapped. Nigro opened the scoring in the 27th minute, ending the second longest shutout streak in Siena history at 314:50. The Saints, which had entered play riding three straight shutout wins, posted a program record 317:31 scoreless streak last season.
Siena took both eight shots and attempted eight corners in the second half, but following a string of several strong chances by the Saints, Figarella added an insurance score for Monmouth in the 78th minute.
Eric Klenofsky made two saves to record the clean sheet for the Hawks.
The Saints return to action Wednesday for a 4 p.m. kickoff against Canisius in Buffalo. The match will be broadcast throughout the state of New York on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
