MONMOUTH DEFEATS DELAWARE 1-0 IN 2013 OPENER
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team opened its 2013 campaign, its first in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, with a 1-0 victory over the University of Delaware on The Great Lawn on Sunday afternoon.
Monmouth (1-0) got on the scoreboard in the 41st minute when senior midfielder Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) played a short corner to freshman forward Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional), who found Costello for a cross. Junior back Alexa Freguletti (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah), at the far post, headed the service back into the far into the netting for the 1-0 lead.
Freguletti, a preseason All-MAAC Team performer, notched her sixth goal of her career, while Costello, also a preseason All-MAAC Team selection, tallied her 19th career assist and 61st career point in the Blue and White.
"Defensively we were able to minimize Delaware's chances. Ashley Lewis was terrific in managing the game," said head coach Krissy Turner, who has guided her Hawks to a season-opening win in 11 of her 16 seasons. "If we can focus on finishing our chances, we will compete all year long in each game."
Monmouth outshot the Blue Hens 16-11 in the match, forcing UD starting goalkeeper Jessica Levy to make seven saves. Lewis, who made a career-high seven saves, notched her first career shutout for the Hawks in the victory.
Michelle McEnroe paced UD’s offense with three shots, while Natalie Zelenky and Chelsea Duffy added two shots each on goal.
Monmouth returns to action on Thursday, August 29, when the Hawks travel to Lehigh University for a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m.
Notes:
Monmouth is now 6-0 all-time versus the University of Delaware.
Monmouth last won its season-opener in 2010, when the Hawks opened 4-0, including a win at #17 Rutgers, which led to MU's first national ranking.
Costello (61) is now only four points away from tying Mary Wilks and Jeannette Goepfert (65) for 13th place all-time at MU in career points
