McTamney scores twice, Costello nets first goal of season in win
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team defeated NJIT 3-0 on Thursday night on The Great Lawn to improve to 4-0 to start a season for the fourth time in program history. In the win, Monmouth's third shutout victory, freshman Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) added two goals, while senior Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) tallied her first of the season.
Head coach Krissy Turner, who last guided her side to a 4-0 start in 2010 and the program's first national ranking, said, "It was an overall solid effort tonight. To get another shutout is terrific. We need to continue to improve each day to prepare for conference play."
The Hawks got on the board in the 8th minute when senior midfielder Alexandra Baca (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) played a through ball to McTamney for a break, as the forward beat NJIT goalkeeper Samantha Bersett for her third career goal. Monmouth increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 73rd minute when freshman midfielder Julie Spracklin (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) slipped a pass to McTamney for her fourth goal in two games.
The Blue and White grabbed the 3-0 lead in the 77th minute when junior back Alexa Freguletti (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) crossed a ball into the box which Costello settled, turned and fired into the net for her 22nd career goal.
Monmouth outshot the Highlanders 24-2 in the match, including a 14-1 advantage in the second half, forcing Bersett to make 10 saves on the night. Monmouth goalkeeper Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) made one stop in net for the Hawks for her third career shutout.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, when the Hawks travel to Columbia University for a 1:00 p.m. match with the Lions.
