MONMOUTH DOMINATES BRYANT, 2-0
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University men’s soccer team outshot Bryant, 19-3, and found the back of the net twice to defeat the Bulldogs, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium. With the win, the Hawks improve to 8-3-0 (2-1-0 NEC), while the Bulldogs fall to 1-8-1 (0-4 NEC).
Derek Luke (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored in the 18th minute, when Christian Nogueira (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) found him in the middle of the box. Luke went left to beat Bryant goalkeeper George Spanos and put the Hawks on top, 1-0.
Later in the first half, Ryan Clark (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) passed from the corner to feed Kalle Sotka (Helsinki, Finland/Makelanrinteen Sports) in the box. Sotka also went left to beat Spanos in the 36th minute, accounting for the final 2-0 margin.
In addition to the 19-3 advantage in shots, the Hawks also took seven corner kicks to the Bulldogs’ two. Hawks goalkeeper Alex Blackburn and the Monmouth defense posted their seventh clean sheet of the season. Blackburn made two saves in the effort.
The Hawks return to action Friday, when they travel to Teaneck, N.J., to take on intrastate NEC rival Fairleigh Dickinson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
