MONMOUTH POSTS SHUTOUT IN 2-0 WIN AT NJIT
September 4, 2014
NEWARK, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team recorded its second straight road win on Thursday night at Lubetkin Field, as the Hawks defeated NJIT 2-0, behind senior back Alexa Freguletti's (Mahawah, N.J./Mahwah) third tally of the season and freshman forward Rachelle Ross' (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) first career goal for the Blue & White.
Monmouth (3-2), which outshot NJIT 25-5 overall, also got a pair of assists from sophomore forward Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional), her second career multi-assist match and first since registering three assists versus Manhattan in 2013.
Following a scoreless first half that saw the Hawks outshoot the Highlanders 14-4, Freguletti, who now has 13 career goals from the back, got the Hawks on the board after nodding in a cross from the endline off the foot of McTamney at the far post in the 53rd minute.
"We did an excellent job of attacking the width in the second half, which led to the first goal," stated Monmouth head coach Krissy Turner.
The Hawks doubled their advantage to 2-0 in the 70th minute when McTamney's feed ahead to Ross culminated in the freshman's first career points for MU.
Monmouth, which posted its third shutout of the season, and highest shot production total of the year, also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Turner added, "To get our second shutout on the road is a credit to our players committing to defending as a team."
Graduate student goalkeeper Nicole D'Agostino (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central/Pitt) made a pair of stops for the Hawks in her second straight clean sheet, while her counterpart, Samantha Bersett, was forced to make eight saves for NJIT.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, September 12, when the Hawks travel to Fairleigh Dickinson for a non-conference match at University Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
